SDR1500 controlling multiple transverters.

Phones jack on the front..

I am having some problem when I turn on the flex-1500, it is not every time that I got

LF out of the Phones jack on the front, the VAC is on in the menu and then there are no problem

to get the LF from the computer sound-card. If I run the setup (PSDR 2,23) agin and "repair" the instalation

the LF is back...on the front panel ?????

Running FLEX -1500

I´m having a beat tone appearing every time for a short period every time going from TX to RX.

Starts out strong and fades out after about half a second.

Don´t know if it is related to the strange error message i get every time starting PSDR

I get:
"The procedure entry point NtAlpcSendWaitReceivePort could not be located in the dynamic link library ntdll.dll"

Any ideas ??

Hi,
I'm just trying to set up my Flex 1500 to use with my 23cms transverter. The transverter is 28mhz IF and PTT gnd to TX. Inside my trvtr is a sequencer for the attached 1296mhz PA and LNA. Here is my problem---I would like a short delay on my audio/TX compared to the 1500 PTT out so that all the relays/ etc activated by the sequencer in my trvtr have time to switch/ settle before my 1500 starts to TX.

Reading the manual causes confusion. On the antenna form--P32 and P96 as well as PTT enable it is possible to enter a delay---but what is delayed---the PTT line? There is no explanation to accompany the diagram. On page 103 of the manual---Options Tab--it shows a diagram that mentions Enable--TX out delay. Again this is not explained---whilst it sounds like what I want--the check box and accompanying box to enter delay values do not appear on my Options Tab in PSDR v 2.2.3

So is the delay mentioned in the antenna form the correct place to delay the audio/ tx out or will it delay the PTT line activation? Thanks in advance,

United Kingdom Band Plan 60m

Having acquired a "Notice of Variation" (NoV) to operate on 5Mhz I have had the firmware on my 1500 updated so the rig is recognised as a UK unit (a turf file was provided by Waters and Stanton for this.). I was hoping to be able to use it on 60m, however I cannot TX on the channels. Is it possible to transmit using the 1500 on the following frequencies:

5260 kHz 5258.5 kHz FA
5280 kHz 5278.5 kHz FB
5290 kHz 5288.5 kHz FC
5368 kHz 5366.5 kHz FK

These frequencies are not part of the standard UK bandplan and may not be used by UK amateurs unless a. NoV has been issued. As I have one of these any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Flex1500 and lagging CW - asio drivers helps a lot but...Would the external keyer help even more ?

As an new user, flex/CW is driving me crazy.. :hehe:
I really can´t operate my bencher paddle with the flex, the lag is way too big that i could send CW. :w00t::w00t:

I noticed that using asio4all Universal ASIO Driver For WDM Audio
maded BIG difference. Now the CW keying is much better, almost with no lag

But there is still bit a lag, not much but a bit which is making keying bit difficult over 20wpm speed,
and i was wondering... would external keyer solve this problem ?

Does anyone have any experience with those.At the moment i don´t have any external keyer on my shack
and before building one, i like to ask will that help ?

All my windows7/64bit sound/recording devices are configurated to 48Khz/16bit

New user / Problems with used flex-1500, is my hardware working correctly.

I have just bought an second hand flex-1500.
But it seems that i have some difficulties with that - least on psk-31
and there seems to be lots of rx spikes all around on the bands witch can been seen from the SDR waterwall.

See the picture.

All those spike lines normal when receiving signal ? They all all the bands and seems to originate from 12Mhz.
Even without antenna - but not so strong - is this hardware related / normal.

Second thing is when i´m transmitting psk-31, nobody is answering,lol

I then maded small setup with my second rig/laptop and received my own psk-31 cq with that and noticed that
well no it´s not working, psk-31 signal looks fine, but hdr will not decode it ? very strange.? Then when i dropped power
very very low then system started to decode psk-31 just fine. But when i increased the ouput (say >5% and over)
decoding stopped.

I activated the tuning signal from the sdr and noticed from my second receiver/ hdr that it´s waterwall window is full of lines all over the band when flex is transmitting. I then went to the garage and took my old ts-430 and sended with that few watts of CW to confirm that there is only only single line and yes there was only one line on that band.

So is it normal that flex has spikes all around when receiving and transmitting ? Or is my hardware broken ?
My powersource is an 12v battery.
Any ideas, please.

Oh and is it normal that sdr s meter shows S3-5 even without antenna. ?

HLA 150 Audio Grunge

I am a new owner of a Flex 1500. I get perfect audio reports barefoot and also with a Heath SB200 linear with 5 watts in and 50 watts out. The audio when monitored on a Yaesu FT-950 is smooth as a baby's behind.

I purchased the HLA-150 from H&Y, it makes great power output, but the SSB audio is not a smooth as the tube linear. I have used the HLA-150 barefoot with the Flex 1500 and also driving the Heath SB-200. I have had numerious on air reports, the audio is near perfect, but has a little choppyness at times when running the HLA-150 barefoot or the HLA-150 driving the Heath.

I don't think the HLA-150 is biased just right for SSB. If I attempt to lower the drive on the Flex to allow lower output, say 80 watts drive into the SB-200 the audio become more choppy and clips. It is like I have to run the Flex 1500 at full drive for best result of SSB audio.

I called H&Y and Bob said factory warranty would mean shipping it back to Italy, he suggested you don't want to do that. The only return policy is within 2 weeks of purchase. He suggested I call a man in Tennesse. All I get is a phone answering service that the call has been forwared to a voice mail after two calls.

I tried running the HLA-150 both Manual and Auto. No difference. Bob at H&Y suuggested I run the SSB switch on, I commented the manual says that only holds the PTT if one is running Auto. He said no you want to run SSB when running SSB. So I un-hooked the PTT line, switched the amp to Auto, 3DB swich on and SSB delay on.

Are there some experts with linear building that could tell me if this amp is biased too close to 0 for SSB??

Personal comment, the support from Flex is just great, that from H&Y is on the opposite end of the specturm! I am waiting for email replies from H&Y.

I have been using my 1500 for about 5 months with ZERO issues.

It was in use last week, when I shut down the SDR program and disconnected my 1500. A few moments later, reconnected the 1500 to my laptop and did NOT hear the USB acknowledgement from my laptop.

Checked "device manager" and found only the "flex USB kernel".

Un-installed all SDR programs and re-loaded the CD. Followed the instruction booklet from 1500. No luck, same problem.

The OS is windows XP

Any ideas??

this to share my experience on installing and using the DJ Console mp3 e2, installation went flawless, just follow step by step Tobias instructions on his site.

As to the operation, being able to leave the focus on the logging entry window is priceless, the VFO B knob is also very handy, I did programme the two buttons underneath as Split and MultiRX, this makes the tuning on DX receiving frequency very easy, final touch the slider which allows you to separate VFO A and B on left and right ear.

This tool add even more flexibility to your Flex radio and allows to use it to the full extent

Powersdr 2.2.3 win7 64 bit audio crash !

on...but then ther are no audio from the speaker... then I have to run the setup

again and select the Fix/repair.....

Hello Fellow Flexers.
I've come quite along way these past few days getting acquainted with my Flex 1500.
Ive had WSPR running with good success, But I've got problems with Crashing, Loud White Noise(FM type sound) which I have to Turn the Flex 1500 Off and On to correct this.
Please any idea's. I need to be able to leave the Flex unattended but can't until this Crash is Sorted.
I could do with a quick response to this. I have read of other Flex 1500 users with the same Issue.

Remote Operation of the FLEX-1500 via a LAN/WAN?

Has anyone setup their FLEX-1500 for remote operation via a LAN connection?

Due to antenna restrictions where I live, I am setting up a remote base at a friend's house (ham friend ;-). The link will be a fast cable modem connection and I have no problems with that part.

As the FLEX-1500 doesn't have an IP port, I am curious to learn how some of you got around this limitation.

Now I have my own ideas and I am ready to share them... but I am also interested in reading about other experiences in this area.

i just purchased another flex 1500. really wanted to get it going as vhf IF. the problem i am having is that my transverters are all high input. then when you get into the fm portion of the vhf bands the software kicks out with a cant tx on 30mhz error when the PA port is selected.. i am not going to switch all my transvrters to low drive just because of cb'ers. is there a work around or patch for this?

This is given as an downgrade Option when VAC 4.10 is Purchased. I tried ages to get 4.10 to work. My last thing was to try 4.09. Works great.
The Navigation problem with Mouse in Panadapter only lags/jerky movement when CAT control is enabled. Maybe something the Flex team could work on.
HP laptop Pavilion dv6000, Win XP 32bit O/S. 3gb Ram AMD Turion64 X2.

Flex 1500 Working Well Now with Just a few Problems - Any Help Please.

I've had a real tuff time trying to find out why my Flex1.5k wouldn't Decode WSPR signals Properly. But all is good now after downgrading VAC4.10 to VAC4.09.
The other Problems are - Navigating around the Panadapter with Mouse is Very Laggy/Jerky. The CPU is fine. It worked great just until the other day
Also Power Output on Flex and WSPR, I'm set a t 20% output on Flex but my PWR meter displays 0.25W.
Any Help on these would be appreciated. Thank you.

Big Big learning Curve with the Baby Flex. My first impressions are Fab.
I'm into Digital Modes, Psk, WSPR, Ros,Jt65HF ect.
I've been watching Dudley's video on Digital modes, but the quality is not to good to see exactly what com0com settings should be.
I'm sorry if this has been covered, would really appreciate some one to one help getting the Baby Flex Configured correctly.

Flex-1500 Power Output

OK. I've had my Flex-1500 for 2 months, now, and enjoyed using it for SWLing. But now I finally received my Astatic D-104 Silver Eagle microphone and I've wired it up to the Ethernet cable connection to the Flex-1500. When I transmit, the TX Meter says I have up to 100% Forward Power and the TX Meter's MIC setting shows the microphone works. (In fact, I had to reduce MIC gain on the D-104. MIC level was originally too high!) I can see the TX spectrum on the computer screen, and it looks good.

But there's a little problem. Or, maybe it's not a problem. I hooked up a wattmeter to the output with a dummy load. It's a Heathkit HM-102 Wattmeter. OK, the scale is 200 Watts max, so the little 1 to 5W from the Flex-1500 won't deflect the needle at all! But I also checked the wattmeter in my Yaesu FT-901 Antenna Tuner. It has a 25W max scale. Again, the meter won't deflect at all! Even when whistling into the MIC on USB mode.

Am I missing something? Or, do I just need a lower wattage wattmeter? If there is no response to this post soon, I'll hook up an HF power amplifier and see if I can get anything out of that. I sure hope I didn't break something in the Flex-1500. I don't think I ever transmitted with more that 2:1 SWR. Is it easy to break with bad termination or high SWR?

after setup ,from my location of IO82XP my first contact was tony F5VBY who gave me a report of 5/9+20 for a distance of 614.4 miles then into rolf DK2MH who gave me a 5/9 report for a distance of 570.1 miles both contacts were made on 40m usb in phono with really good audio reports . set up for my flex is as follows , pc running vista studio sounds boom mic through 8 channel audio mixing deck , to TGM 36SR 3 element multband quad at 40feet ,

Just a quick note, I picked up a 'RM Italy' amplifier the other day to use as an alternative to my THP amp.

The HLA-150 appears to work well, it has RF-Sensing and automatic band-switching (or manual switching f you wish?)..

There is also a PTT input (which isn't necessary with RF-Sense/Switching), so it's plug and play!

The amp is designed for inputs of 1-10 Watts, so the output with the Flex-1500's 5W output is 100W on high power and 50W on low (hi/lo switch). With the aforementioned input, it runs relatively cool, even at 100W.

One important feature is that is has the band-pass filtering for 1.8 - 30MHz.

Running Flex 1500 in Parallel's Window on MacBook Pro

The MacBook is a mid-2010 15.6”, I5 cpu with 8gb RAM, Seagate Momentous hybrid drive, running Lion and the latest version of Parallels 7. I have 4gb RAM earmarked for
the Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit installation. All updates to Windows have been
applied. When running radio, I turn off the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. I used a wired USB mouse and radio was connected with stock USB cable having ferrite at each end. Internet connection was through Ethernet.

Radio software includes PowerSDR 2.2.3, VAC 4.09, VSP 1.03 and Fldigi. I run only in digital modes due to very bad hearing. Setup for PowerSDR is pretty standard. I do set
buffers at 2048. Fldigi uses the RigCat file from the Fldigi site. All software installed without a glitch.

Radio is connected to an Alpha Delta DX-EE fan dipole that I also use with my
3000. In that setup, I found that little tuning was needed on the 20-15-10 meter
bands. So, I did not use my LDG in initial testing. I also have the THP 45 watt
linear amp for use with the 1500 but did not use it in initial testing.

After starting PowerSDR, I configured Fldigi, and went to 10 meters. Started
seeing signals immediately and was reading them easily-did need to adjust
receive font size to help my tired, old eyes. I set the Drive level to 100 and
the TX gain to -4; RX gain was at 0. Did a test transmit and my ALC level was
-1db. Started transmitting my CQ and received callback from station in North
Carolina (I am in Phoenix, AZ). We swapped macros and a bit of extra chat. I
switched to 20 meters and had QSO with a Wisconsin station. I also had contacts
with station in Cupertino, CA (20m) and North Ridgeville, OH (10m).

All of this was with PowerSDR running in a Win 7-window, and Fldigi running in
another window both atop the Mac-Lion desktop. Output power was about 4 watts,
and a couple of the contacts spoke of the strong, clean signal they were
receiving.

The antenna is about 35' above ground with ends about a foot lower than center and runs E-W. It is attached to a mast being held up by tripod used for satellite dishes/TV antennas. The tripod sits atop my flat foam roof.

My next step is adding the amp in the TX line, but I don't expect any issues
since it is outside the computer link.

Flex -1500 with MacBook

I am considering purchasing the Flex-1500. I just finished reading the review in the December issue of QST magazine. Apparently some USB implementations can cause latency problems for both CW and voice.

I have a MacBook Model MacBook6,1 with a Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of memory, and I am running Windows 7 under Bootcamp.

Is anyone using the MacBook and, if so, have you experienced any latency problems?

Connect to the single point ground system in your shack. Alternatively, if you have no single point grounding system, ground the FLEX-1500 to the metal chassis of your computer with a low impedance ground strap, such as a 1” braid or copper strip (the screws that hold the computer power supply in place make an excellent grounding point)."

This assume you are using a desktop or tower configuration. How do you RF ground a laptop with a plastic case to the Flex-1500 to your RF ground bus?

Bug Blog

I found a bug report that matches the same issue I have. I checked with another user of the 1500 who just received his radio a week ago and he has experienced the same issue. So the system says to use the "Bug Blog" to comment on existing bug reports, but where is this bug blog? I think Flex would want to know others experiencing the same issue.

1500 preamp noise

Hello all I am new to the forum and this is my first post question. I have my 1500 setup for receive only. I have noticed that when my preamp is off I hear a rolling rushing noise until I turn it on. Sometimes it goes away at the +10 setting and sometimes it does not go away until I set it at +20. however, when I turn off the spur reduction it goes away. It's hard to notice when a signal is present, but quite noticeable when there is not. It is the same whether the antenna is connected or not. Any ideas Thanx.

Interesting .... I really like the Tunable Notch Filters but I did find a "birdie" on 10mtrs that is really really loud at times that my TNF did not take care of totally with the deepest setting. So I stacked another on top of it and wow!! It did the job! I think the loud noise is from a nearby factory and it varies a lot but now I know that the TNF's are additive. It was probably in the documentation somewhere or posted somewhere but for me it was a new discovery.

THP HL-45B Amp and Flex 1500

I understand that THP in now putting a warning sheet into their instruction booklet that says the warranty is null and void if using the Amp with SDR radios!

I talks about SDRs having a factory set fast RF Key Time Delay that is too fast for the Amp. It further states that you must change the Time Delay to a lest 10ms minimum otherwise the amp can be "killed"easily.

Anyone else notice this or have any issues? I have not seen any posts from HL-45B users about having any failures with that amp and the Flex 1500.

So in looking things over, it appears on the Power SDR software, under the Antenna tab, and under that Flexwire PTT Out that you need to enable the delay there. Is everyone doing this? Are you setting it to 10ms or a little more?

Computing power required for good CW operation?

FLEX-1500 just arrived yesterday, so total newbie here with 20 questions. Less than 10 minutes from opening the box to listening on the bands through the horrible static - nice start.
Now starting to play with the transmit modes (into a dummy load) and noticing anomalies that I assume are the fault of the PC(s) I am using. Started with a 2005 vintage Dell Pentium 4, 3.4 GHz machine. Receives ok but maxes out the cpu fairly often. When I transmit on cw, the delay is disconcerting and the tone is very poor (scratchy noises). On any voice mode, the audio is distorted. Switched to a 3 year old Lenovo T60 laptop with Centrino VPro for comparison - the cw tone cleaned up quite a bit and so did the audio (slight artifacts once in a while - I'm listening to the signal on a separate receiver). So I conclude that the old Pentium just doesn't have the hp for the job, and the laptop is close, but not as good as I had hoped it would be. Playing with the buffer size didn't seem to help. Also, the laptop "lump" style power supply generates steady S9 noise - and it's my work PC (not mine) so don't really want to use it for this.
So, even though I have looked at all the info on recommended computers, and read lots of anecdotal information in reviews and on this forum, most of the information seems to be aimed at the 3000 and 5000 and the Firewire issues, with little information about what is recommended for the USB based 1500.
I was hoping to not have to buy a new PC to run this, but it's looking like I may need to. Looking at the myriad of processors available today, it's a bit bewildering as to what features are important and what isn't. Is the PowerSDR written to take advantage of multi-core CPU's? Is that where the performance stems from, or is clock speed more important? I realize it's a combination of all things that make up the system, but what are the critical elements for this application, as well as the other software one would use with it (digital modes, etc)?
I'm not opposed to buying one of the "FLEX ready" PCs, or building one using the components they spell out, but would like to gain a better understanding of the under the hood stuff that makes it work as it should.
I really want qsk like a Ten Tec on CW :-) Was that the quietest relay they could find???? Yikes! I find that the sidetone audio delay causes me to send lots of extra dits.

Hardware Questions - Flex 1500

I guess since it is an SDR, there is little information about the hardware. I have tried finding some information on the transmitter section of the 1500, but it is either not there or I am missing it. So my questions are:

What is the duty cycle of the transmitter? Can I run with digital modes/CW/SSB/FM/AM at 100% drive?

I just keep on learning more and more about this FLEX-1500...

Installed a MFJ-1788 antenna [i](brand new but had to "Imagineer" a solution as the press-fit nuts broke off due to misalignment between the MFJ hole pattern and the COTS saddles to mount the antenna... but I digress). [/i]

No matter what I did, the F-1500 would go into TX but no RF was present. To make a long story short, one item is [u]missing[/u] from the manual: When you change from RX only to TX/RX, you >> MUST << power-cycle the radio itself!

Tested it on FCC experimental frequencies and all is well now (F-1500 is unlocked)

I feel ashamed that it took me a couple of hours of scratching my head, checking to see if my dummy load and meters were good, reading the manual again and again, scouring the Internet, etc.

Lesson learned!
