Having pre-ordered I keep checking the list to see if the TBDs in the Feature Matrix go away.
The ones that are listed were what made me pre-order.
I will be using mine for Digital Modes and weak signal modes like WSPR on HF mostly.

I also want to build a 100 watt external amplifier I can drive with 5 watts to go with it.

The Flex-1500 sounds exactly like what I am looking for (and can afford!), but I don't know if I can wait that long.
Come on, at least give us a picture I can print and sit on my table.

What a nice suprise it woud be if Flex would change the max power out to say 10 watts when the production units arrive. That way, one could use something like an AL-811H with the 1500 to get up to 120 watts or so and still use the same Linear when you upgrade to the 3000 and run up to 800 watts ! I really love the idea of the 1500 and that would lure in a ton more buyers I believe. Most likely me for sure. You could still dial the thing down for QRPp or Qrp. I am enjoying playing with PowerSDR and some downloaded IQ wav files.

Don't count on anything other than a 5 watt output for the FLEX-1500. That was an update fro the original 1 watt version.

I agree , it needs more power , we must look at the big picture . Flex radio needs a small vehicle mobile radio that can be removed from your vehicle and use as your base radio at home ,cabin or camp site , it must have power to push an Amp when needed . However, it should run QRP 5 watts with low power consumption ,Can it not have a small Amp Modula to push an Amp option, along with other Modula options ?

Personally, I would prefer to pay less and recieve a 1W version. If a version without the 5Watt PA board became available (only having 0dBm output) for a very low price, I would buy one in addition to my 5 Watt model.  Everyone has their own plans for using their FLEX-1500, some would like more power, some dont need it. The folks at FLEX have determined that a 5W radio would sell best, so thats what they will make.

If you are interested in an external amplifier, consider the project for a 250 watt amplifier listed in the 2010 ARRL Handbook, or getting an HF Packer-Amp Deluxe (35W) Kit or a HF Super Packer Pro (100W) kit. A 300 watt amplifier is possible using a BLF278 transistor, boards have been made available by a company in Greece.  Ive got a bit more info on these, feel free to contact me (n2gz at gregzenger d0t com) if you would like to discuss.

Personally, I have a high linearity amplifier board scavenged from a decommissioned military radio that I am in the process of building low pass filters for so that I can have my 100+ watts of RF fun using my FLEX-1500 when I am not interfacing with transverters for VHF/UHF/SHF.

What other small AMPs besides the HF Packer-Amp Deluxe would anyone recommend? I'm not sure I'm capable of building the HF Packer-Amp Deluxe. I can solder, yes, but I don't know if I can tune or troubleshoot the thing. I'm just not knowledgeable enough. I was reading through the manual and in it when you make your own toroids, you have to adjust them yourself by measuring the impedance. How would I do that? Are there any reasonably priced non-kit amps available? Something like Tokyo Highpower, but 35-100 amps and inexpensive.

Yes, but as someone mentioned, it only works with the Yaesu.

Tokyo Hy-Power's HL-45B http://www.tokyohypower.com/hl-45b.html

5 in 45 watts out, and FCC approoved

This amplifier can be successfully used with other QRP rigs such as the ICOM 703, though automatic band switching will not be available and the band must be manually selected via the front band select switch.

So... if you want automatic bandswitching, we will need to design an interface that emulats an FT-817. I know others are working on this, as seen in the OpenHPSDR wiki: http://openhpsdr.org/wiki/index.php?title=The_Tokyo_Hy-Power_HL-45B_Solution
